He has written a biography of Ribbentrop (1980) and has published widely on the First and Second World Wars. A recent publication is Der Erste Weltkrieg. Wirkung, Wahrnehmung, Analyse (1994).

Formerly Professor of Modern History at Manchester, Michael Foot has edited the Gladstone diaries. His interest in military history is reflected in numerous publications, including SOE: an Outline History (1984). He has edited Holland at War against Hitler (1990), and the Oxford Companion to the Second World War (1995).
